Rob Miller, managing director of the Rhoda Group, gave a talk called A Really Inconvenient Truth last year at the Hillside Club in Berkeley, California. In this clip he discusses the four scenarios of action vs. inaction in the face of climate change. He also talks about how many of the projections from the IPCC’s fourth assessment report are conservative given empirical evidence of current climate change. At the end of his discussion, (the full lecture is available on Fora.tv) Miller offers a way forward for individuals and business in grappling with the risk and reality of global warming.

I recently attended the following ClimateOne event with Joe Romm, publisher of ClimateProgress and a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress. Romm addresses inaction in Congress on climate, and the inadequacy of the scientific community to deliver their message in the face of the powerful and organized disinformation campaign arrayed against it. A topic we will take up later in a subsequent post.

NOAA's annual State of the Climate Report shows the past decade as the warmest on recordThe annual State of the Climate report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) states the evidence is unmistakable that we live in a warming world, with the past decade the warmest on record.

In their monthly analysis just released of global land and ocean surface temperature data, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports that June 2010 was the hottest on record. The average combined land and ocean surface temperatures for the period from April to June was the warmest on record, and year-to-date (January to June) is the second warmest, behind 2007. The analysis from NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center is based on records dating back to 1880.

GlobalWarmingisReal contributor Anders Hellum-Alexander wraps-up the climate and environmental news headlines for the past week:

  • An important question for environmentalists to ask is; what should be our stance on how to respond to the recession? A reporter at Grist asks, “Feed the economy, or starve it?

The amount of greenhouse gases emitted by even a large and ongoing volcanic eruption is miniscule compared to industrial and automotive carbon emissions caused by human activity. Global warming can, however, help trigger volcanic eruptions by melting the ice that keeps rock from turning to magma. Dear EarthTalk: Is there any link between increased volcanic activity—such as the recent eruptions in Iceland, Alaska and elsewhere—and global warming? – Ellen McAndrew, via e-mail

We must keep in mind the difference between climate and weather. Climate is the average of weather over at least three decades, which means that specific storms or even individual snowy winters, let alone other types of extreme weather, cannot be considered evidence of either the existence or nonexistence of global warming.EarthTalk® is a weekly environmental column made available to our readers from the editors of E/The Environmental Magazine

Dear EarthTalk: The U.S. got socked with several major storms this past winter. Local weather reports never mentioned this as odd. But is it a sign of global warming? — R.A. Forbes, via e-mail

The controversial new book SuperFreakonomics has stirred vociferous and vehement responses, with many accusing authors Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner of “getting it all wrong” in their chapter about global warming. In that chapter, Levitt and Dubner referenced the work of climatologist Ken Caldeira’s work studying the implications of geoengineering – large-scale, deliberate manipulation of Earth’s climate system – as a “solution” to the climate crisis that is poised to consume the 21st century. Many see geoengineering is a dangerous and hubristic path to take, exacerbating the damage already done in our attempts to manage and manipulate nature on a global scale.

In an effort to dissuade congressional leaders to halt their anti-science campaign opposing the Environmental Protection Agency’s endangerment finding signed by EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson late last year specifying carbon emissions as a risk to human health and welfare, more than 500 scientists have signed a letter urging Congress to oppose resolutions seeking to reverse that finding.

Climate scientist Phil Jones, head of the British Climate Research Unit (CRU) at East Anglia University, and at the epicenter of “climategate” – so-called after thousands of private emails were stolen and made public late last year – said yesterday that he had “obviously written some very awful emails.”
